FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION ABOUT MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING

Q: What is Gracie Jiu-Jitsu?

A: Gracie Jiu-Jitsu relies on subduing an attacker using choke holds and joint locks rather than strikes. Over the past 80 years, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu has proven to be the most reliable system for a smaller person to defeat a larger, more athletic opponent. The techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu are based on precise timing and effective use of leverage so that virtually anyone can do them, man or woman, regardless of their age or athletic ability.

Q: How do I prepare for my first Jiu-Jitsu class?

A: Please show up 10 minutes prior to your scheduled class time so we can go through a brief orientation to our Academy. If you have any type of physical disability or illness please check with your doctor before coming.

Q: I am out of shape can I join?

A: Anyone can do Gracie Jiu-Jitsu no matter what kind of physical shape they are in. Our program is designed to be accessible to all who wish to get involved in martial arts.

Q: Is there a limit to the number of Jiu-Jitsu classes I can take?

A: We do not like to limit the number of classes our students can participate in, but we do have different types of memberships. Come in and meet the instructors, view the facility and we can discuss the proper membership for you.

Q: Is Jiu-Jitsu training dangerous?

A: Graice Jiu-Jitsu is one of the safest Martial Arts because training doesn't involve dangerous tactics like eye-gouging, throat or groin striking.

Q: Is Jiu-Jitsu  training suitable for kids?

A: Yes training is perfect for kids! Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is based off techniques that use leverage and natural body movements. It is great for developing balance, flexibility, and giving kids strong, natural body development.

Q: What is the minimum age for a child to be enrolled in the Jiu-Jitsu programs?

A: Our Bullyproof program is designed for students starting at the age of 4.

Q: What do I need to bring for my first Jiu-Jitsu lesson?

A: Just bring clothes you can workout in.

Q: What gear do I normally need for Jiu-Jitsu ?

A: All members need a GI to participate in the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu classes.

Q: How often do are the mats cleaned at the gym?

A: We take pride in a clean gym, so we sanitize our mats twice a day. Once after the morning session and again after the night session.

Q: Do I need to have a previous martial arts background?

A: No.

Q: Is competing in tournaments required to achieve belt promotion?

A: No.

Q: Can I train at Relson Gracie Team HK and still train at other schools?

A: You are allowed to train at any of our Relson affiliate schools by paying the drop-in fee, but NOT allowed to train at any of our competitor schools.

Q: What do I call the instructors at the school?

A: We prefer that the kids use the words sensei or coach followed by our first or last name. Adults can call us by our first name.

Q: Where do I get a Gi?

A: Gis can be purchased from us at the gym, but if you prefer you can purchase one online or from any of the local stores.

Q: Am I required to wear a certain brand of Gi?

A: You can purchase any brand of Gi that you want. All Gis must be suited with either Relson Gracie or Team HK patches on the jacket top and pants to show team pride.

Q: Am I required to wear a certain color Gi?

A: You may wear any color Gi that you wish during regular classes. However it is required to wear a WHITE Gi when attending Relson and Rhalan Gracie seminars.
